Do you have the ability to assess situations and respond efficiently to emergencies? Do you have effective written communication skills and the ability to pass on verbal information clearly? If so, you could be a great candidate for a Security Officer at the University of Kent, predominantly based at our Canterbury Campus.

Previous experience in a similar role would be beneficial, however, it is not essential as full training will be provided. We are keen to hear from you if you are enthusiastic and motivated to be part of a committed security team in providing excellent customer service to a diverse group of people.

The University has an estimated 20,000+ students and staff, as well as visitors that we have a duty to protect and secure. The Security Team maintain a safe environment by preventing crime, responding promptly to emergencies and difficult situations in line with security procedures. Our Duty Managers and Security Officers help fulfil this essential function. For more details about typical duties involved, please see the Job Description.

Please note that this is not a part-time role, it is full-time. Part year means working only during the Term-Time, Fresher’s week and also to cover the weekend prior to each new term start date. Shifts will be mainly 4pm to 1am or 2am (subject to change according to University requirements).

To be successful in this role, you will have:

Good standard of literacy and numeracy which may be evidenced by GCSE Grade C / Level 4 (minimum) English and Maths or equivalent
Excellent oral communication skills and good listening skills (including the ability to clearly relay information in person and via a radio communication system)
Excellent written communication skills to effectively provide clear incident reports and complete relevant management documentation
Demonstrable skills in observation and the ability to appraise situations quickly and effectively

This role is offered by the Estates Department. The Estates Department provides a number of essential services to the University of Kent and is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the extensive grounds and buildings; the security of students, staff and visitors; transport and travel; a postal service and the University Design & Print Centre. It is also responsible for the buildings, new development and construction projects both at Canterbury and at our Medway campus at Chatham Maritime and on the Chatham Historic Dock Yard.
