My client is a contractor for horticultural research and development in the perennial crop sector and the complementary areas of environment and landscape research. Building on this technical base, it offers knowledge differentiated services to trial growing media, crop health and nutrition and provenance, as well as expert technical support and development activity in crop irrigation, fruit breeding and integrated crop management.

They wish to appoint a Glasshouse Assistant to work as part of our friendly busy glasshouse team based at East Malling in Kent. You would be responsible for an area of the glasshouse facilities on a daily basis and involved with the delivery of various levels of experimental and trials work.

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to join our Glasshouse team to work within a busy unit. Duties include general crop husbandry both under protection (glass and polytunnel), potting, weeding, trial picking and some recording, daily watering (the position will require working one weekend per month and bank holiday on a rota system) and any other tasks as required.

A strong interest in a wide range of plants is essential. Also required are good communications skills, the ability to work to protocols in a consistent and accurate way, and a flexible approach as the detail of the trials and experimental work is constantly changing.

The essential requirements for this role are:

• A-level qualification or equivalent
• Current, clean UK driving license
• Some practical experience relevant to the post, for example working plant, or knowledge of plant varieties gained through working on a nursery or garden centre
• Computer skills, must be competent and confident user of standard Microsoft Office programmes including, Word, Excel, and Outlook, and confident Internet user
• An accuarate, consistent and methodical approach, backed up by good record keeping skills
• Ability and willingness to work to very specific instructions or trial protocols
• Self-motivated, flexible and proactive; able to work alone, as well as able to work effectively as part of a close team
• A strong interest in plants and a proactive approach to learning is essential
• Good organisational skills, ability to cope with high seasonal workload and conflicting requirements

A recognised qualification or working experience in Horticulture is desirable. As is a PA1 and PA6 qualification.
The full time appointment will be on £18,000 per annum, 25 days annual leave plus 8 days public holidays, pleasant working environment and eligibility to join the company pension scheme upon appointment.
