Position Expectations
To play an integral part in the function of the Engineering Section. To assist the Management team in ensuring that the organisations assets are maintained and repaired effectively, efficiently and to the appropriate standards of safety.

To work as a multi-skilled maintenance technician and provide a high degree of technical expertise across a broad range of the organisation assets and systems within the teams area of responsibility. The post holder will be a technical specialist, having the ability to diagnose and rectify faults of a complex nature and work on own initiative.


Key Duties

• Carry out all aspects of improvement, maintenance and repair works to the Board’s assets within the team’s particular area of expertise. This will require considerable technical knowledge over a wide range of engineering plant, equipment and installations. To be able to carry out this work to a very high standard, working on one’s own initiative and with minimum supervision is essential. To service, test, diagnose, repair and calibrate advanced electrical and electronic installations, plant and equipment.
• Undertake fault finding on complex equipment and implement solutions.
• Carry out planned preventive maintenance in accordance with any written instructions, perform routine repairs and complete report sheets either manually or electronically.
• To undertake technical/statutory inspections and report either verbally or in writing as requested
• Liaise with others in the team regarding plant or equipment failures, identify any recurring faults and suggest practical solutions.
• To be conversant with and to ensure that all works are carried out in accordance with risk assessments and various statutory requirements, including the organisations Health & Safety Policy.
• Liaise directly with staff of other directorates, contractors, port stakeholders and other outside organisations as appropriate.
• To act as team leader and co-ordinator when specified for small/medium sized internally resourced tasks or projects, including labour, materials and transportation/plant.
• To act as the Department representative and point of contact when on site out of normal day working hours.
• Plan/prioritise a number of complex activities which may require the formulation and adjustment of plans. To include the organizing of outside parties to attend emergencies and overseeing completion of the task.
• Provide training/guidance/instruction/technical advice and support to colleagues and apprentices.
• To provide a flexible approach to normal working time, work overtime and attend emergencies and breakdowns as required. This may include being on a scheduled stand-by rota providing labour availability out of hours or inclusion on a full 24/7 shift rota (additional payment applicable).
• To undertake courses of retraining and improvement as they become necessary.
• Planned maintenance and inspections
• Breakdowns and fault rectification


Skills and Experience
• Trade apprenticeship in the designated discipline to minimum NVQ level 3 standard and associated C&G or EAL in electrical maintenance
• NET AM2
• EAL Inspection and Testing or C&G 2391 – Desirable
• Requirements for Electrical Installations (BS 7671) 17th/18th Edition
• Ability to plan and execute workload for self and others
• Able to demonstrate responsibility and pride in own performance and that of the team
• A positive attitude to work including team working, problem solving, innovation and general flexibility
