Support Worker

We are proud to say that support workers at the Kent Autistic Trust are quite unique. Firstly, we recruit staff who really value every person whether its the people we support, their families or carers, or staff as an individual, respect their aspirations and commitments in life, and seek to understand their priorities, needs, abilities and limits. Secondly, we provide a 12 month comprehensive training and assessment programme for staff, and after that we continue to develop our talent through an ongoing learning and development curriculum.

At the end of the initial 12 months of training and assessment, our new recruits graduate as KAT Specialist Support Worker which reflects their ability as a front line autism expert. Ensuring they are equipped with a broad range of skills to care and support people with challenging and complex needs.

Compassion is at the heart of our business as is empathy, dignity and respect. We ensure any personal care needed is given in a kind and safe manner. We truly offer the people we support opportunities that will enrich their lives through community involvement and new experiences.

Having a flexible workforce means that there is opportunity for staff to seamlessly transition between our residential and day services, and also support our tenants with living as independently as possible in supported living accommodation or at home or in respite. Working for us often means that no two days are the same, but the care and support that the people we support is consistently high quality, with CQC rating all our services good, and many outstanding.

The logistics of the work we do necessitate transporting the people we support to appointments, activities or days out. Driving is therefore an integral responsibility of many of our jobs. Drivers need a full driving licence and the confidence and willingness to drive a small minibus (people carrier) or a mobility car. However, a driving licence is not always an essential criteria for every role but may be an overriding selection criteria.

Staff need to have a sufficient level of fitness in order to participate in activities such as swimming, cycling, walking and housekeeping duties. In addition, some of our accredited mandatory training is physical as it includes management of aggression and self-injurious behaviours.
